Will Micro$oft Be Able To Change The Legacy?

The real test is on, Vista is out. Everyone, even Microsoft, knows that Vista will take time to show its effect. But Microsoft has played another move with the launch of Vista. It has made its HD Photo (the Microsoft replacement for JPEG and initially the Windows Media Format) compatible in Vista.

Still if you try to do some rough calculations then even those who are real bad in math will be able to guess "How big it can be to replace JPEG from the market?" It is next to impossible to break the legacy format JPEG but the thirst to be the only one is the reason why Micro$soft has chosen to hit the legacy.

History tells that when JPEG itself tried to replace it with JPEG 2000, it failed. PNG couldn't replace GIF completely. This time the prey is "JPEG" and the hunter is the desktop king. Making HD compatible with Windows Vista can be step towards the goal but the journey is long enough.

HD Photo supports a wide range of features, including:
  • Multiple color formats for display or print
  • Fixed or floating point high dynamic range, wide gamut image encoding
  • Lossless or high-quality lossy compression
  • Extremely efficient decoding for multiple resolutions and sub-regions
  • Minimal overhead for format conversion or transformations during decode
HD Photo delivers a lightweight, high performance algorithm with a small memory footprint that enables practical, in-device encoding and decoding. HD Photo delivers image quality that is comparable to JPEG-2000 and more than twice the quality of JPEG.
HD Photo is licensed under the Open Specification Promise, under which Microsoft vows not to enforce its patent rights as long as developers conform to the specification.

Another booster to Microsoft's moral is Adobe working with Microsoft on a plug-in with the goal that both Windows and Mac OS X Photoshop users will be able to open and save HD Photo files.

But the complications don't seem to end up...

HD needs very broad support from many software and hardware developers for it to survive. Camera makers have a reason to stop and think.

A further complication is that the enthusiasts dissatisfied with JPEG and most likely to appreciate HD Photo are already embracing an alternative: the raw image formats that provide detailed, unprocessed data straight off the camera's image sensor. Adobe is trying to standardize the chaotic profusion of raw formats through its Digital Negative (DNG) format.

But probably the biggest obstacle is JPEG's momentum. Even if Microsoft gets HD Photo to catch on, supplanting JPEG is another challenge altogether.
