Huge wind machine to simulate category three hurricanes

It will huff, and puff, and blow the house in — but only for research purposes.

Just in time for the beginning of the hurricane season, the University of Florida (UF) engineers have built the world’s largest portable hurricane wind simulator. Mounted on a trailer, the device is composed of eight 5-foot-tall industrial fans powered by four marine diesel engines. This simulator can produce winds of up to 130 mph, the equivalent of a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It was designed to learn about how hurricanes damage homes and how to make them more hurricane-resistant.

UF civil and coastal engineers plan to use the simulator to blast vacant homes with winds of up to 130 mph — Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale — and high-pressure water jets that mimic wind-driven torrential rain.

The goal: to learn more about exactly how hurricanes damage homes, and how to modify them to best prevent that damage.

So next time you feel like hurricanes coming, be rest assured its just simulated ;)

Virginia Tech Collected At Wikipedia

Contributions of 2,074 editors, 107 references and no supervisors or managers to speak of, at last count, wikipedia has created a polished, detailed article on the massacre, with more than 140 separate footnotes, as well as sidebars that profiled the shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, and gave a timeline of the attacks.

According to the foundation that runs the various Wikipedias around the world, there were more than 750,000 visits to the main article on the shootings in its first two days, an average of four visits a second. Even The Roanoke Times, which is published near Blacksburg, Va., where the university is located, noted on Thursday that Wikipedia “has emerged as the clearinghouse for detailed information on the event.”

From attacks to responses to the incident to inaccurate media reports wikipedia has everything collected and well organized. A good note to gun control debate has also been added.

Titanic's Passenger List Goes Online

Dozens of pages featuring the original handwritten passenger list are available, revealing the cabin class of passengers.

They poignantly show the emigration plans of many hopefuls setting sail from Southampton for a new life in America in 1912.

The White Star liner, touted as "unsinkable", left port on April 10, only to sink after hitting an iceberg, with the loss of 1,523 lives.

Among the passengers, for example, was George Mackay, a 20-year-old butler from Scotland travelling third class and hoping to start a new life in America.

In first class the Countess of Rothes is recorded as travelling with her cousin Gladys Cherry and her personal maid Roberta Maioni. They survived after being picked up by the ship Carpathia.

Findmypast is an online research site that provides information on genealogy.

The online listing coincides with a commemoration service to be held in the British port of Southampton on Sunday for the hundreds of residents who took the voyage as either passengers or crew and who died when the Titanic went down mid Atlantic.

The list completes the set of passengers lists for the ships leaving the UK during the decade between 1910 and 1919.

A spokesman for findmypast said the lists were considered so high-profile by the National Archives that they qualified for the same level of security as Henry VIII's divorce papers and the Domesday Book and could only be consulted under supervision.

He said it also gives details of the lucky few who narrowly escaped the fate of the other passengers when they disembarked from the ship in France.

The original documents also show that some passengers who intended to board at Queenstown (Cobh in County Cork) did not actually embark, despite having purchased tickets, he said.

Your Processor Will Now Supports 256Terabytes of RAM

When there is room for one, there is room for more, and as many of the markets already have a competitors battling for the supremacy on those particular segments, there isn't much headroom for newcomers, or even new ideas. But what about a veteran with a new idea, that might work, and it's just the thing the computer industry would require, some fresh information to feed upon. Guilty for bringing the intel is Sun Microsystems, whose CEO and president, Jonathan Schwartz announced on his blog about new processor, called the Rock, no connection to the guy interpreting the Scorpion King from The Mummy.

The Rock processor has 16 cores, and it can support up to 256Terabytes of RAM “in a single software domain (plain vanilla OpenSolaris, no less)”. The CPU has 2395 pins, 812 used for signaling and 1514 for power/ground purposes, the other serving (apparently) no purpose whatsoever. Schwartz also said about the memory support that: “That is an awful lot of RAM in a single system (and given the cost of memory nowadays, you'd want to post an armed guard next to that machine).” But on the other hand, details such as “how many threads per core; why this chip heralds the golden age of effortless parallel programming; how it brings fault tolerance to the masses” are still being kept secret for the time being, but it sure sounds like whatever they have prepared for us is going to be big. As for a time frame when this product will be available on the market, I'll just have to paraphrase Mr. Schwartz and say “stay tuned”.

Google's Most Luring Perk - Buses

The shuttles, which carry up to 37 passengers each and display no sign suggesting they carry Googlers, have become a fixture of local freeways. They run 132 trips every day to some 40 pickup and drop-off locations in more than a dozen cities, crisscrossing six counties in the San Francisco Bay Area and logging some 4,400 miles.

They pick up workers as far away as Concord, 54 miles northeast of the Googleplex, as the company’s sprawling Mountain View headquarters are known, and Santa Cruz, 38 miles to the south. The system’s routes cover in excess of 230 miles of freeways, more than twice the extent of the region’s BART commuter train system, which has 104 miles of tracks.

Google is famous for its exciting perks (you are missing something if you do not know about those) which it offers to its employers around the world. It's university style of environment in its campuses gave it the top place in 100 best companies to work with in 2007. Even Microsoft was no where near Google in that list.

Now to add to the list Google has launched its own transport system, which it operates through Bauer’s Limousine, a private transportation company in San Francisco. An interesting article in NY Times shows how in Silicon Valley, a region known for some of the worst traffic in the nation, Google, the Internet search engine giant and online advertising behemoth, has turned itself into Google, the mass transit operator. Its aim is to make commuting painless for its pampered workers — and keep attracting new recruits in a notoriously competitive market for top engineering talent.

• 32 shuttle buses equipped with comfortable leather seats and wireless Internet access.
• Bicycles are allowed on exterior racks.
• Dogs on forward seats, or on their owners’ laps if the buses run full.
• Riders can sign up to receive alerts on their computers and cellphones when buses run late.
• They also get to burnish their green credentials, not just for ditching their cars, but because all Google shuttles run on biodiesel.
• At Google headquarters, a small team of transportation specialists monitors regional traffic patterns, maps out the residences of new hires and plots new routes — sometimes as many as 10 in a three-month period — to keep up with ever surging demand.
• And ofcourse, just like other cool Google perks, this is also FREE!

Map of the Internet

You might have seen the map of our own planet earth, the small topographical maps and many more. Now here is something new for you, Map of the Internet. Year 2006 passed but has left behind us the great world interconnected with IP. The map shows that there are still healthy amount of IP addresses available to be used. But well, there is no mention of IPv6! Still, good work.
